Get Primal for Life! Nutrition & Eating Primally

by Jennifer Mujica

The best nutrition for optimal health can be a maze of information with new research trumping last year’s popular trends.  New buzzwords like gluten free, bad oils, sugar epidemics and plant based are common to hear.  What was the most frequently searched diet term on the Internet this past year?  Paleo.  It is the foundation of a world renowned healthy lifestyle founded in Malibu called The Primal Blueprint.

There is one nutritional plan that has survived popular trends and given humans optimal health for literally 10,000 years.  Mark Sisson, fitness expert, trainer, author, educator and Founder of  The Primal Blueprint, refers to it as “Eating Primally.”

Mark states, “I am very certain that 80% of your body composition success is determined by how you eat.”

Forget every conventional health lesson you’ve learned about the standard American diet and grains.  As Mark explains, “Let’s look at this base knowledge through a new lens.”  Ignore the notion of powering up on carbs for a long intense workout and consider a new paradigm.  Let’s learn the real facts about grains, carbohydrates, saturated fat, and sugar.

mark sisson malibu chronicleEating Primally has two simple premises.  First, grains are not particularly healthy — they are unnecessary and often function as anti-nutrients in the body.  (Anti-nutrients are natural or synthetic compounds that interfere with the absorption of nutrients).   Second, the body prefers burning fat instead of carbohydrates.

The Primal Blueprint is a lifestyle.  While many health plans are simply diets that have a beginning and end, Going Primal is a lifestyle that brings optimal health, longevity, happiness, energy and many health benefits, including hormone balance, increased bone density,  decreased body fat, increased muscle mass, self regulated appetite and the LGN factor (Mark refers to as Looking Good Naked).   Let’s learn more!

What exactly do grains, gluten, carbohydrates and sugars do to harm our health? Listen closely…this really makes sense.

The most important reason to reduce carbohydrates is that carbs stimulate higher insulin production.  Your insulin levels rise and store the excess carb calories (as well as those from fats and protein) as our arch enemy — FAT.  What happens then?  Often people will power up on carbs and exercise more attempting to reduce fat.  The body burns sugar and continues to store the fat.  Those love handles grow even bigger after all your hard work exercising!  It’s an endless cycle with disastrous results.

MarkPaddle malibu chronicleInsulin at normal levels is the “master hormone for its critical and comprehensive role in transporting nutrients from the bloodstream into the cells in your body, but some of its most important action takes place in muscle and fat cells.  High insulin levels wreak havoc in many ways.  Cholesterol and triglycerides become oxidized and inflamed, initiating the process of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.  Hormones get out of balance, including melatonin and serotonin cycles.   And insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes. ” (Source:  The Primal Blueprint 21 Day Total Body Transformation).

Powering up on carbohydrates is clearly not the way to prepare for your exercise routine, reduce fat, get energized and be healthy.

Why eliminate grains?  Grains have been a part of the American diet for generations.  But with the onset of foods from genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) and processed food ingredients, more and more people are experiencing problems that trace back to grains and gluten.

There are three (3) basic reasons for eliminating grains from your diet.

1.            Grains elicit a high insulin response.

2.            They have far less nutrition than meats, vegetables and fruits.

3.            Grains contain anti-nutrients that can promote inflammation and compromise digestion and immune function.  These include lectin, gluten and phytates.

Inflammation is the root cause of many chronic diseases.  Eating Primally reduces inflammation. It helps you take control over conditions such as chronic pain, obesity, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, migraines, thyroid issues and cancer which are all related to inflammation.

Sugar is “the ultimate affront to your genes — it promotes systemic inflammation and causes an instant suppression of immune function,” explains Mark Sisson.

No diet is as nutrient rich as Primal Foods — healthy, natural, meats, vegetables and fruits.  An easy guide to Eating Primally is Mark Sisson’s book “21 Day Total Body Transformation.”  He guides you through easy action items to primalize your kitchen and fridge by eliminating grains, legumes and sugars from your diet.  Mark Sisson has written seven books to help you live your healthiest life.
