Pepperdine University Celebrates
by Sue Hardie
A sold out crowd of 800 enthusiastic supporters of Pepperdine University gathered at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Saturday night, January 24th, for the 39th Annual Pepperdine University Associates Dinner. They were celebrating the successful conclusion of the University’s most ambitious fundraising campaign in its 78 year history.
Thanks to the generosity of nearly 50,000 alumni, friends, faculty, staff, foundations, and corporations, the campaign surpassed its $450 million goal by more than $20 million. Donors came from all 50 states and 65 countries, contributing more than 159,000 gifts to the campaign. More than half of campaign donors were first time givers to Pepperdine. The money raised includes an incredible $141 million in new scholarship funds and support for students. The campaign was led by Pepperdine regents Marylyn M. Warren (’58), vice president of eHarmony.com, and Glen A. Holden, U.S. Ambassador (Ret.).
The evening was an elegant affair with Keith Hinkle, Senior Vice President for Advancement and Public Affairs, serving as master of ceremonies. After Pepperdine University President Andrew K. Benton’s remarks, award winning singer, Natalie Cole, entertained the appreciative audience. Ms. Cole brought the crowd to its feet when she sang a “duet” with her father, Nat King Cole, singing “Unforgettable” on film projected onto the screen behind her. The evening was, indeed, unforgettable.
